Sergio Roca Pereira – Pharmacist and MSc Biotech, Predoctoral Student
Graduated in Pharmacy and specialized in the field of Molecular Biotechnology. Interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in the development of therapies for their treatment. Currently, I am immersed in a Ph.D. program in Biomedicine, within the Neurological and Neurogenetics Diseases Group, under the supervision of Dr. Pol Benito Andrés and Dr. Mónica Povedano Panadés. My research project is focused on the comprehensive characterization of the fundamental molecular pathways in the ALS-FTD pathological spectrum, based on the clinical phenotype.
My academic journey began with the completion of the Pharmacy degree at the University of Santiago de Compostela, where I conducted experimental research in the Department of Organic Chemistry. During this project, I focused on the synthesis and characterization of 3-hydroxycoumarins using the Perkin-Oglialoro reaction, under the guidance of Dr. Maria Joao Correia Pinto Carvalho De Matos. Later, I expanded my scientific knowledge through the Master's program in Molecular Biotechnology at the Universitat de Barcelona. During this period, I conducted my experimental Master's thesis in the Pharmacological Strategies for Neuroprotection Group, supervised by Dr. Jordi Olloquequi and Dr. Miren Ettcheto Arriola. In this research, I studied the role of protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B (PTP1B) on cognition in a systemic inflammation model. Finally, I furthered my academic training by completing the Training Course for Personnel as Experimental Animal Users at the CCiTUB.
